The true benefits of the Seasonal Worker Program

Earlier this year 2PH sent me to Tonga with a representative from the company. Our host took us on a tour of the mainland of Tonga to demonstrate what new developments have taken place as a direct result of the SWP. It was a humbling experience to see what some of the workers have achieved and how financially important the program is to the whole of Tonga. Last year alone $17m was sent back to the islands to build houses, educate their children, buy vehicles, etc. This has resulted in a significant improvement in their living standards and general wellbeing of the Tongan community.

We visited some of the 2PH workers who very proudly showed us the homes they had built for their families as a result of income earned from the program.

The exciting journey continued and we attended and addressed a community gathering to promote the benefits of the SWP. We were amazed at the number of people that attended the gathering and the passionate confessions from families that have benefitted from the program and those that had participated in the program.

We were invited to a team building session where the team leaders meet with all the workers where they play games and do exercises to prepare themselves for their time in Australia. The team spirit and bond that is developed during these sessions remains extremely valuable prior to their arrival in Australia. We were given the opportunity to address the group and explain what to expect when they arrive and work in Australia.

We met with various Government Officials, medical staff, etc. and shared information on what is working well and some of the challenges. We were encouraged by the willingness to listen and help improve some of the operational issues. One of the positive changes being made to pre-departure briefings is the involvement of family members/spouses so that they feel part of the process.

Our leaders honoured us by cooking a pig and seafood in the traditional Tongan way. We were extremely humbled once again by the generosity and gratefulness of the Tongan people.

We learnt so much about the Tongan culture which we need to honour and respect when they work in Australia. The importance and value of the SWP to the Tongan people cannot be over emphasised and we as Australians need to protect and value this for the long-term benefit of the Tongan people and Australian businesses.
