Hillwood Berries Tasmania

Hillwood Berries Pty Ltd has grown so large that its white tunnels can now been seen from the East Tamar Highway.

The farm produces not just strawberries but raspberries, blackberries and blueberries; all grown on the commercial farm as well as the Hillwood Berries Farmgate next door where the public can hunt for their own berries.

But what sets Hillwood Berries aside from other Approved Employers under the Seasonal Worker Program is their unique accommodation facilities, housing seasonal workers from Tonga and Timor-Leste.

Archers Manor situated in Newnham was once a thriving conference, wedding, restaurant and holiday apartment complex which fell into a dormant state a few years ago. These facilities have now been converted especially for Hillwood Berries into a combination of accommodation styles, including partitioned dormitories of single, double and triple rooms. The building has numerous common rooms for workers to enjoy multiple viewings of movies or sport. Gym equipment, pool tables, table tennis and volley - ball are just some of the entertainment that is enjoyed. The dining area is one of a kind, with old world English décor where the workers enjoy a dinner meal each day.

Motel and apartment rooms are also converted for the harvest season to house seasonal workers with their own kitchen and living areas.

The Farm has recently reacquired the old Australian Maritime College (AMC) Student Accommodation located in Beauty Point. This facility lies on the scenic Tamar River close to many well-known tourist attractions. The accommodation comprises 112 single rooms, four rooms share one bathroom with each block having its own lounge and laundry areas. Pool and table tennis are also on hand with a cardio gym room.

There is a large common dining area where the daily dinner meal is served. The most exciting addition to this accommodation facility is the gymnasium with an indoor basket - ball court which has been well received by our Tongan and Timorese workers. Just somewhere to let off a bit of that extra steam when not picking berries!

The smaller of the accommodation facilities we call The Lodge, it is situated right along the Tamar River in George Town with the most exceptional of views and when a cargo ship passes, a friendly wave is exchanged. There are 8 rooms with en-suites, common lounge / dining area as well as food prep and large kitchen areas. Pool and table tennis also available along with Foxtel viewing. Attached is a 2bedroom unit, shed and carport.
